What is MaxBack?
MaxBack integrates SAP MaxDB databases into the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS is the standard technology used by all major backup products to create consistent backups of Windows servers — whether physical or virtual.
Without MaxBack, backup tools can only create crash-consistent snapshots of MaxDB databases. With MaxBack, the database is properly prepared before each snapshot, enabling:
- Consistent backups — The database is in a known good state when the snapshot is taken
- Backup history — Each backup is recorded in the MaxDB backup catalog
- Point-in-time recovery — Apply transaction logs to restore to any point between backups
- Autorecovery — Automatic database recovery after VM or bare metal restores
Supported Backup Tools
MaxBack works with any backup tool that supports Windows VSS, including:
