How licensing works
One license per MaxDB database instance — not per host, CPU, or server.
Every instance running MaxBack needs a license — including production, development, QA, and test.
Example: 3 hosts with 5 database instances total (1 production, 2 QA, 2 development) = 5 licenses needed.

How many licenses do I need?
MaxBack is licensed per database instance — not per host or per CPU. You need one license for each MaxDB database instance, including production, QA, development, and test systems. For example, if you have 3 hosts with 5 database instances total, you need 5 licenses.
Do you offer a trial license?
Yes! Download the latest installer and sign up for a new account. During signup you can request a trial license to evaluate MaxBack in your environment.
What happens when I cancel my subscription?
You receive a perpetual Standard license for the version current at cancellation. Your backups continue to work — you only lose access to upgrades, consulting, and extended support.
Are upgrades included?
Only with the Subscription license. Standard and Enterprise licenses are for the purchased major version. To upgrade to a new major version, you would purchase a new license or switch to a Subscription.
What is the difference between Standard and Extended Support?
Standard Support covers product bug fixes. Extended Support (Subscription and Enterprise) additionally includes consulting on optimal integration with your backup infrastructure and cause analysis for third-party tool issues.
Do I need separate licenses for development and QA?
Yes. Every MaxDB database instance running MaxBack requires its own license, regardless of whether it is a production, QA, development, or test system.
Is MaxBack SAP certified?
SAP certifies MaxDB backups only for Backint integration, not for storage-based backup like VSS. However, MaxBack is fully supported by SAP as it uses the external backup feature of MaxDB.
Can I get help with the initial setup?
Yes — we offer professional installation services as a separate engagement. Contact our sales team for a quote. For ongoing consulting on how to integrate MaxBack optimally into your backup infrastructure, the Subscription and Enterprise tiers include dedicated consulting.
